AGSA Player Development Goals

This is a list of some skills that may give coaches guidelines as to the level they should strive to help ALL players to attain.  These goals are just part of what you will be teaching.  The bottom line is AGSA is an instructional league and the development of every player should be the focus of your coaching.

 

8u:

Coaches Goals: 

  • Provide equal opportunity for all players
  • Introduce beginning level knowledge of playing the game

 

Team Goals

  •  Positive Sportsmanship for the sake of all players, coaches, umpires and fans displayed towards both teams!
  •  Develop an understanding that the individual in fastpitch is part of a team and teamwork is an important part of the game offensively and defensively.
  •  Be able to listen and understand what is being said by the base coaches.
  •  Learn the value of supporting your teammates.

 

Team Goals

  •  Gain a knowledge of positions
  •  Know all teammates names

 

Pitching Goals:  

  •  Start learning the pitching motion even though this is a coach pitch division.

 

Defense Goals: 

  •  Correct throwing motions for all players. Arm back, elbow up.
  •  Catching a thrown ball when the throw is at shoulder height. Emphasize elbow down, glove up. De-emphasize the "basket" catch for higher thrown balls.
  •  Correct posture for catching a ground ball.
  •  Introduce catching fly balls.
  •  Stress defensive playing positions and the names of the positions

 

Base Running goals: 

  •  Running through 1st at top speed.
  •  Not running through 2nd and 3rd.
  •  Introduce the consistency of player order in the batting lineup.

 

Hitting goals: 

  •  Build confidence for hitting live pitching
  •  Proper stance and transfer of weight.

Coaches Goal: 

  •  Positive Sportsmanship for the sake of all players, coaches, umpires and fans displayed towards both teams!
  •  Start developing pitchers continue developing knowledge of playing the game. Situations, rules, strategy, etc.

Team Goals

  •  Develop an understanding that the individual in fastpitch is part of a team and teamwork is an important part of the game offensively and defensively.
  •  Be able to listen and understand what is being said by the base coaches

 

Pitching Goals:  

  •  Focus on the pitching motion for throwing a fastball for strikes.

 

Catcher Goals: 

  •  Introduce blocking wild pitches.
  •  Introduce throwing to bases.

 

Base Running Goals: 

  •  Introduce lead even though stealing is not allowed at this level.
    •  Timing for leaving the base as the pitcher is throwing.
    •  Taking a few steps off the base but not taking your eyes off the ball.
    •  Hustling back to the base when the ball is not put in play or the catcher catches it clean.
  •  Introduce sliding.
  •  Correctly rounding the bases.

 

Hitting Goals: 

  •  Introduce the skills for bunting.

Coaches Goal: 

  •  Positive Sportsmanship for the sake of all players, coaches, umpires and fans displayed towards both

 

Team Goals

  •  Double plays in various situations. From the normal turn at 2nd base to doubling off runners who stray too far on fly balls or line drives
  •  Signals from coaches

 

Pitching Goals:  

  •  Working on control
  •  Changing speeds
  •  More experience pitchers will start working on multiple pitches.

 

Catcher Goals: 

  •  Catchers blocking and throwing to bases
  •  Dropped 3rd strike and the options for a putting out the batter.

 

Base Running Goals: 

  •  Introduce and continually work on stealing & sliding

 

Hitting Goals: 

  •  
    •  Walking- pitch count situations
    •  Bunting
    • Situational hitting based on the count & runners on base.
